Free Books Available Feb 2, 2013

PREPAREDNESS FAIR #1
WELCOME!!!
Please see above for how to read these books without a Kindle, and the sidebar at right (under the “Follow by Email” button) for a quick explanation of this blog. Have fun getting new books! :) May I suggest that you check daily so you don't miss all those available for only 24 hours?

Many of yesterday's books will still be free, so if you missed checking then, it's still worth a visit, as you may pick up some gems that way.

------------------------------------
If you are coming here on a later date than February 2, please check the most recent list for today's books: Main Page.   (Some of the books below may still be available. Most are free for 1 or 2 days but sometimes they are free longer.)

Mel wrote about the Russian family that ran away from society (For 40 Years, This Russian Family Was Cut Off From All Human Contact):
" I really wish they had turned this into a book. As long as they followed the family, there was probably much documented about their lives.
"The story of the "one rye plant" was so telling. To have your hopes of future crops come down to one plant and it's potential seeds would be immeasurably scary.
"I read most of the story to my family last night. It prompted long discussion of how very fortunate we are and how bad things could get. I cannot imagine the distress of losing your last cooking pot in an area there was no way to replace it. It also emphasizes the importance of learning to do things now and a good library of "how-to" books."

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Mel.   I had a hard time trying to imagine being so suddenly rushed away and never again seeing another person, getting help even when they are starving and having to choose who will live.  Why not slowly make a way back, as they made their way out, and stay on the outskirts to see if there is any safe help?  Obviously, they had their reasons, and possibly they wouldn't have been killed by persecution or the war if they had.  But I can't quite see sacrificing my family's lives without TRYING some other options.
Imagine never ever ever seeing or speaking to another person than your immediate family for 40 years.  No chance of marriage for your children; knowing you will just die out.  Only 3 books to read, for 40 years. Just outside of our paradigm.

And there is a book!  Lost in the Taiga: One Russian Family's Fifty-Year Struggle for Survival and Religious Freedom in the Siberian Wilderness.  It's out of print and hard to find.  It's listed at over $900!

There is also a video/movie about them, found HERE in 3 parts.

More pictures of the homestead as it was first found by geologists by accident in 1978.

I also found another article with a bit more information, answering a few of the questions the first article brought to me.  Russianpedia: The Lykovs.  The story of how and why they ran away is somewhat different (or includes more).

It adds that the 3 family member who died one after the other died from infections brought by people from the outside world, not having built immunity to those diseases.  It also explains more about Agafia's hermit life and how she gets some help from volunteers and from the country.

And a synopsis of the book is HERE, with some more/different information.

True Accounts

Cloudman, Surviving Stage IV Cancer: A New Beginning
”Cloudman is the story of an artist who films clouds for a living. Suddenly told he had 2 months to live, after being diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer, Peyton tells a surprising narrative of survival, illustrated with his aerial photography. The author carries us along on his emotional whirlwind while traveling the globe and raising a son. Although his journey is personal, the lessons are universal and apply to anyone confronting a crisis.

I Talk Slower Than I Think: An Antidote to Helicopter Parenting
“Most of the stories will make funnybones ache, but a few will make heartstrings feel like fresh sutures. A child tries to eat a biscuit that is so hard firemen must remove it; Sammy the Basset steals a baloney his own approximate size and shape; there is no reset button when a neighbor knifes the ice cream man over a thin dime; and, "A Fine Bordelleaux" moves into the house nestled between a child's school playground and his church…”

Favela Children
”Ute Craemer is an educator and social worker who has dedicated over thirty years of her life teaching and nurturing the poor children of the favelas (slums) in Brazil. As an experienced "Waldorf" teacher - the school movement initiated by Rudolf Steiner - she has been able to understand the needs of the children and their families and provide them with the spiritual nourishment they cry out for. Favela Children is a moving and informative account of Ute's Craemer's work in the favelas and of her personal development. Everyone interested in education and social development will want to read this book.”

Bronze
”The inspiring true story of a teen suddenly paralyzed, facing the challenges of her disability and finding extraordinary strength, glory and love along the way.”

Forces in the Air
”In the days before the recognition of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, life could be miserable for a family in the Forces. Ms Trumley tells of a post-WWII childhood with constant moving, ostracization by classmates, a strict father who drank to excess to cope with his own inner demons, and a subsequently low self-esteem in herself. This could be a dark story, but Ms Trumley-Parisotto tells it with humour and hope, cathartic for both writer and reader.”

Oy Yew
”A dark Dickensian fantasy. Oy Yew is the most unlikely of heroes. ‘Lay low and grow,’ is the motto of the waifs of Duldred Hall. But Master Jeopardine is determined to ‘feed them little and keep them small.’ When the master’s methods grow more sinister it seems there is little they can do. Until Oy arrives and the fight for survival begins. Oy Yew was longlisted for the Times/Chicken House Award.”

The Imam of the Cave

With the secretly obtained footage, they download it onto the Internet and sell it to the fee paying public….”

Collapse, Post-Apocalypse, Speculative Futures

Three Strikes - are you who you think you are?
“Mid twenty-first century Britain, where society has decayed and a single-party state has emerged is the backdrop for his dystopian thriller. Britain has declared itself as an island state and shut off all relations with other countries. Set against this background, Eddie Thompson, investigative journalist, strives to expose the ‘Britain Party’ as no more than a fascist dictatorship. Eddie, however, has made himself significant enemies. In order to meet the needs of the people of the isolationist state, production zones have been introduced. The state has adopted a three strikes and out policy against repeat criminals. Three strikers aren’t simply incarcerated for life at the expense of the state, but subjected to something much more sinister. “

More Sci-Fi-or-Fantasy-ish

NANOBOY
”This is the story of MARTIN, a disturbed and withdrawn thirteen-year-old boy, who in the midst of a severely malfunctioning environment is coming to use his prodigious skills at Nanotechnology to spread mayhem and disaster around him. As his increasingly destructive inventions grow in power and scale, government ploys of even vaster significance spring up almost simultaneously, putting his childish ventures in catastrophe into the broader context of anyway looming global deterioration of values and meaning. A world of lies and deceit falls entirely apart as the detrimental danger of Nanotechnology displays its true face to everyone.”

Dust
Short. “A hungry alien substance has traveled to Earth following a doomed Lunar mission, and it's consuming everything it touches, leaving behind drifts of gray death. No life form stands a chance, but Clyde Jackson is tougher than most. He's seen war and he's been in plenty of foxholes. Now he's living through the end of the world one day at a time in a panic room that has become his only refuge. It's only a matter of time before the ventilation fails, and it'll only take a single gray speck to end it all... “
