Free Books Available Feb 15, 2013

The new Preparedness Fair starts tomorrow! (all going well). Hopefully I've given you enough notice to choose (or even write) a post about preparedness for the new Preparedness Fair.

CAN YOU HELP SPREAD THE WORD?
It would be so wonderful if you could all think of someone who might have a preparedness blog or who might be interested in writing a post that they could share here. Do you belong to a Facebook group about homesteading and survivalism? An internet community or forum on preparedness? Would you be willing to share about this so that we can get this buzzing a bit? Please grab the code for the button that's now on the bottom of the left sidebar, and paste it into the html of your blog posts or forum posts, or copy and save the picture below onto your computer to then add into a Facebook post with a link. Or just write something and add a link? It will make the first Fair so much more interesting if there are more than a couple of participants. Thank you!

If you're new here today, or if you want something to copy for helping spread the word, here's the "blurb."

COMING SOON
Have you written anything about preparedness? The Preparedness Fair is coming February 16, and would love to have your post included on it! The focus will be on disaster preparedness, and sharing our experiences and insights that might benefit others.

FICTION

Nature Survival, War, and other Hardship

The Rain Falls On Both
”The social discontent of the States is rising and The Civil War is about to tear the nation apart. This is the story of a young man, his struggle to find the truth, and the choice he must make that will impact his life and those around him, including the beautiful girl that is caught between him and the friend that he fights alongside on the battlefield.”

RUIDOSO ROAD
”Ruidoso Road is the story of life in a small town; rural and raw, going through post war growing pains, where hard work was the only way up or out. …”

A Pledge of Silence
”a historical novel based on the experiences of the nurses who valiantly served in the Philippines during World War II and became the first U.S. military women to be taken prisoners-of-war by a foreign enemy.”
high reviews.

Blood of Vipers
Shorter, equivalent of about 100 pages. Hihg reviews. “When fighter pilot Cal Jameson is shot down in enemy territory at the end of the war, his only desire is to find his way back to American lines. But as Cal hides from a Waffen-SS death squad, he stumbles into a family of German refugees fleeing Soviet shock troops. Soon, he finds himself in an uncertain role as the family's protector. Together, they must stay alive while under attack from partisans, Russian soldiers, and the last, dying struggles of the Nazi regime, which is determined to throw back the enemy, even if it means the final destruction of the German people.”

The Hillbilly Chronicles
Humour.

Julia's Secret Notes
Aboutt 50 pg. ”You are a young woman, have a successful career and a happy marriage. One day you learn that you have a terminal disease. Not quite a surprise, millions have. Nevertheless, you are plagued by a physical and a spiritual torment. 'Julia's Secret Notes' are the map, more than a log, of the last leg of her journey (if journey we call, by one of our lame conventions, the human passing life). “

Frontier Preacher
”…Once he reaches this untamed area, like the other frontiersmen, Corbly finds only pain and suffering as crops fail, there is no money, and Indian raids wipe out whole communities in a matter of minutes. The fledgling government has little respect for these rugged frontiersmen. The bureaucrats think this remote province across the mountains is good for only one thing - collecting taxes - that these poor, unfortunate frontier families are not able to pay. More fear and anguish results from the brutal actions of the Federal government who send troops and drag the suspected "insurrectionists" out of their beds in the dead of winter. …”

Attack at Shark Bay - a thrilling, children's adventure set in New Zealand, in the South Pacific, for kids aged 8 -14 (Riwaka Gang Adventures series)
”This is a high-octane, rip-roaring adventure story for kids eight years and up. When their favorite teacher suddenly goes missing and the police haven't found him, The Riwaka Gang, four country kids who love adventure, decide to get involved. Jackson, Jessica, Rangi and Sam will need every skill plus a ton of courage. Dangerous situations and extreme challenges confront them… With so many impossibilities, the odds are stacked high against them.”

Politics, Terrorism, and Intrigue/Conspiracy

Sacred Treason (Clarenceux Trilogy)
”1563: Anyone could be a suspect; any Catholic could be accused of plotting against the throne. Clarenceux keeps his head down and his religion quiet. But when a friend desperately pleads with Clarenceux to hide a manuscript for him, he is drawn into a web of treachery and conspiracy he may never untangle. Is there no refuge if your faith is your enemy? Bestselling author Dr. Ian Mortimer, writing as James Forrester, has crafted a chilling, brilliant story that re-imagines how the explosive mix of faith and fear can tear a country apart. Sacred Treason tells a thrilling story of murder, betrayal, and loyalty—and the power of the written word.“

ANTROPEON
”In the year 2175 there are no countries or governments. Instead, the giant conglomerates, Neworld and Antropeon, control everything and everyone. It is also a time of worldwide peace and cooperation in spite of the vastly different lives of each company’s associates. Life in this utopian world changes suddenly for Trask Hawkins when he stumbles on a sinister plot and is hunted down by enforcers from both companies. On the run, each day becomes a challenge as he tries to stay alive long enough to discover and expose the truth. His only help comes from a few friends who risk everything to help him. “

Martyr's Inferno
”…Now, framed for murder and running for his life, Hunter finds himself trapped in the middle of an international conspiracy that takes him from the back alleys of Chicago to the white sands of the Caribbean. With the help of a few unlikely allies, Hunter must avoid both the police and the mob if he wants to prove his innocence and unravel the mystery of the Martyr’s Inferno.”

Enemy Among Us-A Jordan Wright Thriller (Jordan Wright Adventure)
“As a funeral procession for two fallen officers begins, terror is unleashed on Independence Mall in the center of Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell and the birthplace of (U.S) freedom. As these events unfold, Wright and his team uncover the true intent of the terrorist, a well planned and precisely carried out robbery of the nearby U.S. Mint. The race begins to find out who is behind this assault on America with the intent to bring down the financial system of the free world.”

IranDate - When Iran Went Nuclear And The World Went Ballistic
A Middle East nuclear thriller written from the Israeli perspective. From the blurb, look-inside, and reviews, this seems to be very well written.

Collapse, Post-Apocalypse, Speculative Futures

Pneumadiluvians Chapter 1
”In Chapter 1 of this serial novel, Liam and Hailey have spent two months trapped in the upper stories of their apartment building while countless around them - in stores, in classes, outside, and in their own building - inexplicably suffocate. The world outside is silent, and calm, and dead. Inside the apartment tower, the living feebly cling to an existence that is slipping through their fingers faster and faster as food runs low. When death is lurking just one floor below Liam, he finds deliverance in a textbook.”
Pneumadiluvians Chapter 2
”In Chapter 2 of this serial novel, Liam expands upon his escape plan to leave the upper stories where thirty-four survivors have been trapped the past two months. But not every survivor is ready to leave or let him leave. Liam and Hailey are forced to leave the tower before they're ready. Before they can warn the others of the attack from one of their own.”
Pneumadiluvians Chapter 4
”In Chapter 4 of this serial novel, Liam and Hailey struggle for direction and stability as they float perilously over campus. Meanwhile, Ben’s found that his anger wasn’t sated with the blood already on his hands.”
Pneumadiluvians Chapter 5
”In Chapter 5 of this serial novel, Liam and Hailey separate hoping that Beardshear’s payoff will be worth the risk. In the tower, the survivors scrounge for any remaining food but are forced to face the reality that they only have a matter of days and no means of leaving.”
Pneumadiluvians Chapter 6
”In this super-sized conclusion to the first arc of this serial novel, the apartments aren't the havens they once were as the survivors are invaded from all sides. Each night is another threat. Yet they are left without anywhere to run.”

American Kaiser
”It is hard to imagine the near future and what it will bring to our wonderful world. Not all that long ago no one---correction, almost no one---would have suggested that we humans could have managed to soil our nest to the extent that we have; and today few can comprehend that but two or three generations hence, from the time you are sitting somewhere comfortable, perhaps in a coffee shop, maybe tucked into your warm bed reading these lines, the place we inhabit will have become an environment so hostile as to barely sustain life as we know it. This is a story about that, or maybe not.”

Never Too Far
”A harrowing story of love and survival. In a future of scarce resources, where the possession of gas and diesel is punishable by death, a teenage boy and a pregnant girl must save their impoverished family. They risk their lives on a terrifying journey to sell stolen fuel on the black market.”

Harbingers
`Short story. ”Is survival enough? A woman deals with life in a post-apocalyptic world.

From the Fire IV
Parts I-III have been listed free before, now here’s IV! ”On April 4th, 2014, 6 billion and 783 million people died in the blinding white fireballs of the Pan-Global Nuclear Holocaust. Sophie Saint-Germain, wife and scientist and mother of one, was not among them. She lived for a time, and so her words endure.”

Seven Fires Promise of the Dawn (Seven Fires Chronicles)
”Based upon a prophesy five hundred years old Native American people survive the long anticipated onslaught within purposefully prepared shelters. Emerging mostly unscathed they return to the ways of tradition to live off the land in cohabitating villages utilizing in harmony the resources of their environment. Elements of culture are intricately demonstrated as an advantage of sociological balance. Genuine historic events are woven into the tale augmented with drama. Cultural philosophies and perspective are represented in a dramatic interactive between man and technology, himself and nature. …”

Pieces of Eight
collection of short stories includes “Last Night: As humanity faces the end, one woman shares her final thoughts.”

Rome Burned In A Few Hours
”The year is 2025, following the Middle Eastern War which transformed the world stage. The United States has edged toward totalitarianism and has just finished the first single-party election in its history. On the day of the inauguration an event takes place that shakes the core of the country and reshapes the balance of power within. Following the actions of members of both sides, "Rome Burned In A Few Hours" is the story of what happens when an empire pushes too far and the actions that must be taken by both sides to protect or destroy. Whether it be the elusive and secret Exuro Intus Hora, or the President of the United States, or various other players that shape the outcome, in the end does it really matter who is right when the cost is so high?”

More Sci-Fi-or-Fantasy-ish

Cyberdrome
“Mathew Grey is a brilliant scientist who accidentally unleashed a man-made plague that ravaged America’s heartland, and now threatens the rest of the planet. Riddled with guilt and running out of time, he decides to use a dangerous technology to enter a computer-generated reality called Cyberdrome, hoping to unravel a mystery that could be the key to Earth’s survival.”

Apocalypse Earth (Downcast)
”Downcast follows the story of Nicholas Carr a year after an invasion has left humanity destitute and fractured. The British resistance are in their final death throws. Desperate and with hopes fading fast, they prepare to engage in a final battle; a last ditch attempt at saving human civilisation.”

Just Reading

The Big Book of Interesting Stuff!

FING: A Modern Fairytale (Illustrated)
”Ulrich Von Strudel has got no knees, but this is the least of his problems. Awful, terrible, despicable things are going to happen to this poor boy. And just when he thinks things couldn’t possibly get any worse. He discovers there’s a monster hiding in his closet. FING is a heart warming modern fairytale about the benefits of staying positive even when faced with the vile Mrs Lipstick!”

The Red Headed Girl
”History and personal memoir come together in this charming and poignant novel about the life of a boy sent to Illinois on one the famous Orphan Trains of the 1920s. The Red Headed Girl is a sequel to The Rawleigh Man Told Me (available from Mahaven Publishing, Coles-Cumberland Press, and Amazon.com and soon to be issued as an ebook) which depicted Seamus’ early life on an Illinois farm in the warmth of his adoptive family, a far more exciting life than it might seem at first. Now, older (all of 14) and bolder, Seamus sets off to find his twin sister who had been adopted by another family. Living with one of his adoptive sisters, his adventures continue, meeting his long lost twin, battling school bullies and even finding a note written by Abraham Lincoln. Not your ordinary coming of age novel, but one that warms the heart of readers young and old.”
