Books Available Sept 22, 2012, PART 2

Two true-life accounts by hiker, about completing the Appalachian Trail, a 2,175 mile footpath, in one hiking season. I didn’t include this in the earlier list thinking it wasn’t particularly going to include any helpful information, but thought better of it; you can decide that to suit yourself!
Skywalker--Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail
Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian trail

FICTION

White Clam
“When young Chet Palmer joined the crew of the coastal schooner Exact in the frontier city of Portland in Oregon Territory in the year 1851, he had no intention of losing his freedom. But a routine trading voyage to the Indian west coast of Vancouver Island, with a stop in Puget Sound to offload a group of pioneers who planned to build a city there, has left him in the alien world of the Nootka Indians as a slave and triggered an adventure of survival and enlightenment beyond his wildest imagination.…Chet realizes survival is up to him, a stranger in a strange land. He immerses himself in the ways of the Indians, constantly aware that his life hangs by a thread and danger lurks everywhere. In time, Chet's acquaintance with a fellow slave, a young Salish boy from the Washington Territory, turns to friendship and to partnership as they plot an escape to the freedom of the Puget Sound country to the south.”

THE ALADDIN NETWORK
“a spy thriller about a plot to destroy the commercial and industrial system of the United States. (Several countries/parties) team up to sabotage the U.S. economy. By using sophisticated encryption and communication techniques, they hit our Achilles heel and the devastation begins.”

The Chosen One - The Mossad in Iran
Middle East nuclear weapons/threat of war thriller

Nuclear Hornet (A Story of Modern War)
More succinct synopsis in a review: "This massive thriller is loaded with dynamic dogfights, crazy attach missions and realistic naval warfare. The plot is both believable and well researched, a diabolical plan by Iran to take on the full might of the US Armed forces. ...The message is clear and important: ... there is no superpower that can't be beaten by an enemy willing to go the distance."

Out of the Gray Zone, Heading South
“This is a story about survival after thousands of simultaneous terrorist attacks on the United States toss the country into a state of anarchy. It is a story about a group of friends who, with the help of Uncle Bill and his nephew Matt, struggle to survive getting out of the city alive. It is about courage, strength, and a determination to move on when all seems hopeless.”

Series.  #1 is free right now.  "When the environment is ravaged by rising sea levels and monstrous storms, America is divided and survival becomes more precious than love."
No Shelter (#1) A Post-Apocalyptic Romance (No Shelter Trilogy)
Not free at the moment: Left Behind (No Shelter, #2) A Post-Apocalyptic Romance (No Shelter Trilogy), and Buried Alive (No Shelter, #3) A Post-Apocalyptic Romance (No Shelter Trilogy)

But the Children Survived
Hurricane and probably biological disaster. “Mindy has been alone for seven days. The man across the street is dead, and the rest of the mobile home park is empty. Mindy's Grammy, Mimi Lane, left the house seven days ago to buy hurricane supplies and never returned. Neither have Mindy’s parents. The water and electricity were knocked out by the hurricane, and Mindy ran out of bottled water two days ago. Where was Grammy? Why hadn’t she come home? Where were her mom and dad? And why did the men in hazmat suits want to find her?”

The Arrowmaker (Awake)
Sequel to Awake, listed here a week ago, which had excellent reviews.
”It is five hundred years since a catastrophe of man’s own making has nearly ended his species’ time on this earth. A small remnant of human beings gathered after those events and resolved then to try to live differently and to survive if they were able. But they could not all agree on how they would live in their new world. A smaller group went apart from the larger and has lived ever since then across the mountains. There had been no contact at all between the two groups in all those generations. But in the previous novel, Awake, a young boy and his friend had left their own group – the larger group, who call themselves simply “the People” – and found themselves captives of those they call “the Others.” In that previous story, the boys eventually escape the Others and make their way back to their own side. In this sequel, we see how they have been changed by their time among the Others. And we see that mankind in general changes only very slowly.”

The Zero Gate
“… four unsuspecting employees working the night-shift at a top secret laboratory, deep under the pine forests of the northern United States… Their day started off uneventfully, but in 47 minutes the world as they knew it was destroyed. Having the unfortunate experience of watching the end via satellite imagery, the quartet find themselves trapped in the enormous underground complex. But things are not always what they seem. The laboratory is involved in more than what they originally believed. Experiments are taking place involving what they call the Zero Gate; experiments that may have a devastating connection to events unfolding on the surface and in the secret chambers of the underground complex. In no time at all they find themselves on a life or death quest to get to the truth... before the truth gets to them!”

Collapsity: When All Falls Down At Once (Level One: A Pre-Apocalyptic Prelude)
Sounds kinda weird so probably right up your alley! ;)
”A black comedy about the end of the world; follows a group of diverse characters as America (and the world) falls down… Climate change, lawlessness, mutant bugs, economic depression - are just a few of the problems they face along the way, as all falls down at once. This is actually a book about ideas masquerading as a pulp fiction thrill ride. Science vs. anti-science. Reality vs. fantasy. And if this world cannot be saved as we know it, what can we do next? And what can we leave behind? Seeds, we’re talking seeds. Metaphorical seeds. Big, hulking brainiac seeds…What kind of seed will you plant? What kind of seed will you defend with a shotgun? And what kind of seed will you use in some kind of kinky sex act? These questions, and many more - may or may not be answered within.”
(Author is) “a former Seattleite now planting a food forest in an undisclosed near-tropical location.”

CASI's Guess
CASI, the climate prognosticater, predicts “a domino effect beginning with the shutdown of photosynthesis and ending in a doomsday scenario.” Sci-fi adventure. Includes many illustrations, photos, and videos. Author is a former senior scientist at NASA whose career spans a seat at Mission control for the Apollo missions to the Space shuttle program.

Transfection
“Molecular biologist Dr. Carl Peters is under pressure on two fronts: his research grants are disappearing and his marriage is falling apart. But when medical researchers announce that genetically modified animal feed has tainted the food chain, he finally gets the funding he always dreamed of. Dr. Peters discovers the reason behind the cancer link with GM food, but it's so crazy, he barely believes it himself.” 2012 WINNER - BEST SHORT STORY - INDEPENDENT E-BOOK AWARDS

Mandate 33
Dystopia about government reproductive control and conspiracy

Collapse (New America)
“BOOK ONE in the NEW AMERICA series. America is falling, ready to join the Roman Empire as a distant memory in the annals of history. The year is 2027. Tired and desperate, the American people are deep in the middle of The Second Great Depression. The Florida coastline is in ruins from the most powerful hurricane on record; a second just like it is bearing down on the state of Texas. For the first time in history, the Middle East has united as one and amassed the most formidable army the world has seen since the Third Reich. A hidden army of terrorists is on American soil. This is the story of three men: Howard Beck, the world’s richest man, also diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Richard Dupree, ex-Navy SEAL turned escaped convict. Maxwell Harris, a crippled, burned out Chief of Police of a small Texas town. At first they must fight for their own survival against impossible odds. Finally, the three men must band together to save their beloved country from collapse.”

THE FALL OF MAN Vol. IV
Volumes 1, 2, and 3 have been listed here previously. “Immersed in her captor's apocalyptic ideology, Katrina learns that they're on crusade to bring peace to the Middle East--no matter what the cost. If she can't prevent their misguided ploy, a scourge will befall humanity, redefining our interpretation of the word MANKIND. In an attempt to prevent Armageddon, IT'S CREATED!!!”

The Blaster
Shorter story incl fantasy. “Power went out across the globe and never came back on. People adapted, eventually. Some, like Lehman and his family, had foresight and banded together with others and formed new types of communities. Lehman and two other men had the idea to network with other communities, so they ventured out on a road trip around the southeast. What they encounter will not only change their idea of what is possible, but change the new world itself. The Blaster is a post-apocalyptic story unlike any other. An exploration of the power of fiction, The Blaster features glowing energy beings, ravenous hellhounds, and the most valuable prop in scifi movie history.”
